Peter Gladys was born on March 21, 1906, the son of Russian immigrants. He graduated from Netcong High School in 1926. His sole ambition while in high school was to become a New Jersey State Trooper. This ambition was met when he graduated the State Police Academy on June 16, 1928 as a member of the 17th State Police Class. Trooper Gladys resided in Stanhope, Sussex County and was assigned to Troop “C”, Hightstown. His service with the New Jersey State Police was characterized by loyalty, fearless performance of duty and energetic devotion to the high principles of the New Jersey State Police.

The death of Trooper Gladys resulted from wounds received while in the performance of duty.

On December 28, 1928, Trooper Gladys was detailed on patrol duty from his station at Hightstown. While transporting a suspect to a Justice of the Peace in Hightstown, Trooper Gladys was assaulted and his throat was slashed three times with a razor, killing him instantly. His body was left in his troop car until it was later discovered by a passing motorist.

Trooper Peter Gladys served 6 months with the New Jersey State Police. He was 22 years old.
